Another Newbie - Hi y'all
« on: September 12, 2005, 06:16:49 PM »
Hi y'all,

My other half (Ann) and I are currently boatless and living in Branston, Lincoln.

We joined this site as we have made the decision to sell our bricks and mortar and move to  life afloat.  It's not a decision we've taken lightly, we have discussed this for about the last two to three years, but at last have finally decided to make the break.

Neither of us are strangers to boating, Ann had several outings on the Broads and we had our own little 20ft Norman until last year when lack of use forced us to sell on (Ann with final year at Uni, I working on an archeology project that needed full time attention).  We've been without a boat for a little over a year now and it's killing us! ???

Yes, that's as far as we've gotten in our deliberations to date.  Ann has a year's contract at Uni with the Student Union but may possibly be able to extend that to two years, so we're looking at making our move at the end of the contract.  However as the university sits right on Brayford Pool, we're starting to think that it wouldn't be a bad thing to bring plans forward.  :o

This was intended to be a brief intro, unfortunately I have an uncanny ability to say a thousand words where three or four would normally suffice.  Seriously though, I will be making several or more postings with requests for information - technical and not so technical, so I hope to hear from as many of you as possible.  We also look forward to seeing you all on the waters too.

Best regards

Darren & Ann

We realise that a Dutch Barge will have limitations with respect to "go anywhereness" but are they capable of coastal jaunts for getting to the southern waterways?

The Branson designs (like mine) can be built to Cat B, which will stand a force 6 (not that you'd want to go out in that for fun) so are quite capable of putting to sea, weather reports permitting.

Hi Chris

"I think that one should read......  How much will it all cost"

Shhhhhhh!  We've been side stepping that successfully so far.  The house sale was going to fund the purchase but looking at prices, I can see I'm going to have to throw in the cats, dog and possibly the rabbits too!

I innocently suggested that there might be a bit of work going at the docks for her skills and SHE won't speak to me now!  I meant your conservation skills sweetie, honestly.

Speak to y'all soon

Regards

Darren & Ann

Go For It.
About 3 years ago, my wife, 5 year old daughter and I decided to move afloat after some bad luck on the work front.

After much deliberation, we decided to buy a narrowboat and have never looked back. We lived in a mere 45' narrowboat and we loved every minute of it.
The summers were great and make the winters worth it.

As I said, go for it and welcome.

Mike

Mike
I don't know about that, sometimes it gets hotter in the winter than it does in the summer on my boat?  ;D
