Hi Advice would be nice
« on: November 18, 2006, 08:01:55 PM »
Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum and some advice would be appreciated. My wife and I recently sold our 60' narrowboat and were ready to have a new one built. However we've had a re-think and are considering having a 60'x12' Dutch barge built instead to live aboard. Any help would be appreciated

Hi,

There is so much advice on so many aspects of having a Dutch Barge built that you need to be a bit more specific about what you need to know.

If you have a look at my other web site at The Iron Dutchess.com there is info and pictures that may be of use, also links to other Barge related sites with loads of info.

Hope this points you in the right direction  :)

I could use a bit of information.  I saw with some interest the photos of the build of the Iron Dutchess and wondered if building from scratch is an economically viable option for me, rather than buying a used barge.  The problem is that I have no idea of what the cost of building from scratch would be.  Could you tell me how much it cost to get the Iron Dutchess fitted out and on the water, prior to the later modifications?

Thanks if you can/are prepared to.

David.

"Iron Dutchess" cost £130,000 alltogether About £28,000 for the steelwork, the rest on transporting it by road from Long Sutton in Licolnshire to Shardlow Marina in Derbyshire and subsequent fit out.

There is a full spec' sheet here.

It would be hard to give you a figure without the modifications as they began with changes to the steelwork during the shell build.

Also the figures above are 2003 prices, what the cost would be today I don't know.

Hope this helps.
