condensation in the wheelhouse ??
« on: January 05, 2007, 09:57:01 PM »
hello everyone  , my barge came from the same stable as the iron dutchess and fitting her out has been a full time occupation for the last eleven months culminating up to today with an aching back from lifting in a ton of paving slabs for ballast ! poor bairn, I hear you mutter ( right !)

Anyway as with iron dutchess my wheel house was made by richochet but I was unsure of what kind of roof to go for , exploring every possibility the choice always came back to the most practical , Canvas !

I knew condensation would be a problem but I certainly wasn,t ready for the shower I would get just going from stern to front cabin , though I soon found out after CANVASMAN  , from otley made the cover and fitted it , the next day the monsoon began so I  had to look at some way of insulating it , well to cut a long story short , I  went to the local B&Q , the building trade one,s that is and in the insulation part of the store you will find a roll of bubblewrap with foil on both sides costing about ?7 get two rolls cut  each roll in half and then duct tape the sides together on both sides , giving you in effect one large thermal blanket which you lay over your wheelhouse trim to size then cover with your canvas roof !

If things are a little tight as you fasten the last side of press studs then undo the roof bars on that side lower them just enough to fasten the studs then tap them gently into place ..

It does work and has a knock on effect with heat retention as well , yes after a rainy couple of days you do get some condensation but certainly nothing like before , I also lined parts of mry engine room roof with this and got the same result .

good luck

I bought some sheets of 4mm twin wall polycarbonate sheeting on the internet and cut it into 4 pieces so it curved along the grain. The roof holds it in place and it has the added bonus of keeping the roof profile good making water run off better.  When the wheelhouse is down the 4 sheets fit nicely out of sight under the sofa as stacked they are only 16mm high.  Since doing this I have had zero condensation.
