What an idiot I am
« on: August 14, 2004, 12:45:00 AM »
Just thought I would try to get the postings on here and let you all know what an idiot I've been.
I live on my narrowboat along with my wife and seven year old daughter and last weekend I realised that I hadn't changed the fan belt in over 2 years, so I bought a new one.
When I got home I thought I would fit the new one. As I tightened the nut and bolt on the alternator...Bang, the alternator casing broke. Doh! that has cost me a trip to Reading Marine on Monday 16th (if anyone fancies a trip out) to get another one...ouch

OK, I know I am answering my own post, but I thought I would let you all know how unlucky one person can be.
I collected the alternator today, came home and fitted the thing in the rain. Started the engine, nothing. No charge light when the ignition was on, no rev counter and the same voltage at the batteries when the engine is running as when its not.
Also, the two wires fitted for the advanced regulator show the same voltage, that of the batteries.
I think I may have a duff alternator.

I will let you know once this is sorted what it was.

OK, it's sorted.
Adam, the nice man from Reading Marine came to take a look and concluded the following.

The rev counter didn't work because the was a dodgy wire connector half way up the wire.
The ignition light didn't come on because there was no power getting to the back of the alternator as I use a split diode charging system. This was fixed when the Sterling advanced alternator controller was connected.
The reason there was an odd voltage coming from the alternator was because the batteries were fully charged and the alternator was working hard enough on tickover to put a charge out....DOH!!

Still all fixed now and ready for a cruise tomorrow.

It's the same the world over....every cloud has a silver lining and mine was, the nightmare made the cruise that followed much more enjoyable... I suppose.

Thanks for your concern though  :)
