Boat insurance, or lack of it!
« on: July 15, 2005, 07:33:50 PM »
SAGA Boat Insurance states that "You will be sent a renewal invitation 21 days before your renewal date which will include details of your premium for the next year." They are right it did, with a massive ?96.00 a year jump in premium to ?652.89, oh yes, including 5% NCD (big deal). This wouldn't have been a problem had the renewal invitation arrived 21 days before the renewal date, but it didn't, it arrived on the 15th July, it wasn't even printed and posted until the 13th July, the insurance runs out on the 18th July, the 16th and 17th are a weekend. As my getting the boat licence is dependant on the insurance and I have cruising plans, it forces me to either accept their inflated premiums or to cancel my cruising plans and look for an alternative company to insure with, which I could have done and kept my plans had it arrived 21 days ago. I made two calls to their "Help" line, in the first call I was told by a young lady "I don't have the authority to change your premiums or resolve your problem." Oh she did say "If you get a quote for less, we will contact our underwriters and see what they say." What in two days over the weekend? So we have a help line that can't help. My second call was made at 5pm the office closes at 5.30pm, a recorded voice told me at least 10 times I was in a "Short" queue and I would be dealt with in a "few moments", at 5.30 I was still waiting and was promptly cut off without a word of apology. They give you all kinds of address' to write to if you are not satisfied, if I had 21 days I could, but thanks to their inefficiency I don't. It seems SAGA have a poor understanding of the concept of time, a "few moments" to them is half an hour at least, as I was cut off, and "21 days" amounts to 96 hours. They do however seem to have a good grasp on the subject of money.... Ours!

I will update this post as things progress, or don't whichever the case may be.

Anyone out there into insurance that can help, please email or PM me with details or a phone number.

Thanks.

Chris,

Have you tried Haven Knox-Johnston, they are the people I used. ?155, mind you, that was for a 45' Narrowboat and not a beast the size of yours.
HKJ will cover you immediately over the phone...

Sorry, I have no numbers for them, but most people will have it.

Many Thanks
Mike

Sorted ???  The department that sends out renewal invitations were pressing all the right buttons, but the system failed to send the info on to the department that actually sends them out.  They also matched another quote I had been given.

Received this from SAGA;

Good Morning Mr Walter,

Apologies for the delay in responding.

However, good news for you our underwriters have agreed to match the offer by Traffords of a ?500 excess for a premium of ?530.00.

I have reissued your renewal invitation for the above amount you should receive this in the next couple of days. We do have a 14 days grace period.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me on 0845 *******.

Hiya,

A bit late now, I know, but when we shopped around the best quote by far was from http://www.collidgeandpartners.co.uk/Insapp1.htm

Might be worth contacting them in time for your next renewal.

Good luck,
Tone  :)
